The last shows of the year in the South Island, and arguably the most fun, are the Canterbury Juniors shows which include, besides the regular dog show events, the coveted Fancy Dress prize and the Best Decorated Trolley or Gazebo.
We had not entered the fancy dress or trolley competition before, but we were overwhelmed this year by a sudden rush of Christams spirit and decided to go all out.
Our first mission was to win the Fancy Dress, which we achieved by rounding up a bunch of cute small children, giving them a Chihuahua puppy in a Christmas stocking, "Santa's Little Helper" and "Naughty" hats and dressing up the rest of the team in Chirstmas costumes. We entered as "Chihuahua Christmas". How could any judge say no to all those cute kids and Chihuhuas!
Our next challenge was the Best Trolley or Gazebo comp and our plan for that was simple. To win, we figured we needed to make it look like Christams had vomited on our trolley.
And we did :)
Of course, again we factored in the cute Chihuahua secret sauce, a metric shit-tonne of tinsel and flashing Christmas lights. Not to mention the cute Chihuahua in the Christmas box (Ava, who would sit on top of the trolley in a box all day if you let her). The panel of international judges awarded us first prize, much to the chagrin of the groomers who had decorated their gazebo with 3 Christmas huge trees and thought they had it in the bag. They have challenged us to a rematch next year and are already talking snow machines. We, foolishly, told them we would be having real reindeer...
Stay tuned. This might get out of hand, LOL.
Of course, it wasn't all tinsel, flashing lights and chocolates (we won so much chocolate!) There was a dog show going on and we did pretty well there, too. On Saturday, Ava, back from her break, took Best of Breed, Best Bitch and Best NZ of Breed. Ben took Reserve Best Dog. Serena took Reserve Best Bitch and Best Junior of Breed, and Narci took Best Veteran of Breed and then went on to take the Group as well. In the Smooth Coats, Scotty took Best of Breed, Best Dog and Best Puppy of Breed.
On Sunday, Serena took Best of Breed, Best Bitch and Best Junior of Breed. Ben took Reserve Best Dog. Ava took Reserve Best of Breed, Reserve Best Bitch and Best NZ Bred of Breed, while Narci again took Veteran of Breed and then went on to take the Group for a second time. In the Smooth Coats, Scotty continued his winning run, taking Best of Breed, Best Dog and Best Puppy of Breed.
Thanks to the Juniors for once again putting on some fun shows and helping us end the year on a real high. We've achieved so much this year, but winning the Canty Juniors Fancy Dress and Best Trolley/Gazebo events might the the highlight of them all.
